Finding student accommodation in Stockholm can be an overwhelming task as there is a shortage of student rooms in the Stockholm area. Sometimes, it can take several months to find something, so start searching as soon as you can. There are some sites specific for students, but one alternative to renting a student room or flat is to share a normal flat with one or more other persons. With the introduction of tuition fees Swedish universities try to help students and provide rooms for students. However, while non-European students can sometimes apply for student accommodation provided by a university, European students are usually left on their own in search for lodging.
Before starting your search for accommodation, you may want to take a look at the different places you could rent and how close are they to your university.Stockholm Universityoffer some information about the different student areas in the city.
How to find student accommodation in Stockholm
Here are some useful places to get you started:
Student websites
SSSB(Stiftelsen Stockholms Studentbost¤der)
Some time ago you could registered at the web site of SSSB, which is the main housing company for students in Stockholm, before you started studying. To be able to rent accommodation in this site you have to accumulate queue days: the more days you are registered at the website the more chances you have to book a place that suits your preferences. However a new rule came out in July 2010, to be on the waiting-list one must be a member of a student union which means that new students cannot register at the SSSB website before their arrival in Stockholm. Nevertheless, you should not worry too much about this because even if you could register beforehand, typically one needs at least 500-600 credits (i.e. days registered at the website) to be able to rent something, so SSSB will not solve your problem anyway.
There is something, however, that can help students with few queue days, it’s called “last minute accommodation”. This is a special case where anyone can apply for accommodation, and it has a first-come first-served scheme, without waiting days. This sort of announcements are very hard to get, as the SSSB website receives hundreds of visitors per day, chances are someone will see it before you. But if you want to try your chances I have a small tip for you, the last minute releases are not random, they somewhat follow a pattern. From my experience I see that they are announced primarily on Mondays and Thursdays between 12 pm and 15 pm. Occasionally, they are also posted on Wednesdays around the same time. If you want more info about how to know when they are released contact me for details.
Stockholms Bostadsf¶rmedling(Stockholm housing agency student section)
It costs 225SEK a year to be registered in the housing queue. You also have to pay an allocation fee of 500SEK if you obtain a student flat.
Stockholm University housing service
In order to be able to apply for housing here you need to be an exchange student. There is unfortunately no possibility for masters or free-movers to get accommodation through the Stockholm University Housing Office.
KTH accommodation pages
KTH Accommodation can help tuition paying Master’s students, Master’s students holding a scholarship and Erasmus Mundus students to find an accommodation during their studies at KTH.
They will not provide accommodation for Master’s students from EU/EEA countries, unfortunately. However, there is a section where people can post renting opportunities for all students at KTH (and some times open for other universities) in thePrivate sublets / Annonsblocksection. There are other housing companies that provides accommodation depending on where you study, here is the list:
